Hate Story | Movie Review

The film is based on Vikram Bhatt's story and it looks like he is hellbent on proving to his uncles Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt that their well-known mix of revenge, hate and abundant skinfest he can do better.

Since the revelation of its bold promo till its first uncensored trailer, Vivek Agnihotri's latest release Hate Story did it all to stir up a tremendous buzz in the tinsel town. Hate Story follows the age-old vendetta theme, but it successfully captivates the viewers' through a compelling plot and the intrepid dare bare scenes by the bong bombshell Paoli Dam.

Hate Story revolves around Kaavya and her transformation from a simple middle class journalist to a sex worker to seek revenge. The movie shows how Kaavya uses her sexuality as a weapon in order to avenge her humiliation against Siddharth for betraying her trust. The movie has an assortment of sexually explicit scenes and also extensive use of fiery dialogues.

Paoli Dam, who has carved her niche in Bengali cinema, makes a confident and promising debut with Hate Story. In short, she made a powerful impact with her 'wow' performance throughout the movie. Gulshan Devaiya, who was earlier seen in DUM MAARO DUM and SHAITAN, plays the anti-hero with gusto. Nikhil Dwivedi solely plays a positive character with a good performance.

Vivek Agnihotri has stylised the entire cat and mouse game between the protagonist antagonist in the most sensual way. A number of dramatic scenes get enhanced due to some blazing lines. Though engaging in parts, there's no denying that the second hour seizes your attention, making it a watchable experience.

Vicky Donor | Movie Review

Vicky Arora (Ayushmann Khurana) is an aimless and jobless Delhi boy. He is persuaded by Dr Baldev Chaddha (Annu Kapoor), an infertility clinic owner to become a sperm donor that could help childless couples. After much resistance, he finally agrees to the act to earn some easy money. Soon he makes a fortune out of his potent attribute. He also marries the love of his life Ashima (Yaami Gautam) but things take a drastic turn when she comes to know about his covert contributions to the sperm bank.

Vicky Donor comes with a fresh story. Call it a love story on the backdrop of sperm donation or a film about sperm donation with a love story within - the writing by Juhi Chaturvedi seamlessly integrates the two elements to come up with a wholesome entertainer. Further director Shoojit Sircar flawlessly catches the pulse of Delhi and the drama in the narrative.

While the film lightly touches on the theme of the shortage of sperm donors and the social stigma attached to the act (unlike blood or organ donations), it intentionally refrains from being an issue-based cinema. Vicky's initial opposition to the idea aptly brings out the average apprehensions and his consequent consent reveals the monetary motives behind the act.

The love story between the lead pair that starts off on a flirtatious note but soon translates into an amiable affair, brings a sublime smile on your face throughout. The romance is refreshing and the chemistry between the couple is hot-n-happening. Soon the love affair of the cross-cultural couple gets into the 'Two States' zone. The film takes an unapologetic look at the culture characteristics (or call it cliches) of the Punjabi boy and Bengali girl and the divergent divide expressed in the sequence of scenes that lead to their matrimony is absolutely uproarious.

But beyond having a splendid sense of humour, the film also has a very poignant side to it. The fact that Vicky's fervent fertility isn't of any productive use to himself is where the film defines a strong contrasting conflict in the narrative. Since the couple's camaraderie was so sizzling, you feel the pinch as they part ways. Further Sircar successfully defines and distinguishes emotions, elucidating how the point of marital discord between the couple is not merely mistrust but insecurity. The climax comes across as convenient though isn't unconvincing.

The pacing is fast and the multiple-montage crisp editing never lets you lose the narrative. The dialogues vary from the quirky to the well-worded conversations and contribute immensely to the humour quotient. The music is peppy and goes smoothly with the flow of the film.

Vicky Donor is what it is primarily for the livewire energy of Vicky played by Ayushmann Khurana. The actor is so natural that it never seems he's acting but rather gliding through the role. He is a pro at both the comedy and emotional scenes. Given the right roles, Ayushmann has the potential to be the next big thing in Bollywood. Yaami Gautam is absolutely ravishing and captivates with her unending charm. The beauty also reflects in her performance. The supporting cast is blessed with quirky yet relatable characterizations. Annu Kapoor as the desperate doctor is brilliant and incites most laughs. Dolly Ahluwalia as the hyperactive Punjabi mother is superlative and such a pleasant change from the regular prototypes. Kamlesh Gill as the modern grandma who shares a drink with her daughter-in-law and aspires for iphones and LED TVs is another fabulous characterization and a fantabulous actor. Jayanta Das as the girl's Bengali father is as much amusing.

With its endless spirit and 'spunk', Vicky Donor brings to life an original, untold and entertaining story. Like sperm donors, there's always a shortage of good films in Bollywood. So do not miss this one!

Verdict: Very Good
Director: Shoojit Sircar

Cast: Ayushmann Khurana, Yaami Gautam, Annu Kapoor

Bittoo Boss | Movie Review

Supavitra Babul's latest release Bittoo Boss that has hit the big screens today, has lots to say, but somehow lacks the fineness and uniqueness. No wonder debutant Pulkit Samrat and Amita Pathak made a good attempt, but failed to make it to it's best.

The movie commences with an elaborate Punjabi wedding and gradually talks about the love story of a videographer who takes pride in calling himself a ‘Sesky Video Shooter’. Bittoo falls in love with a rich woman, who makes him realise the importance of money, recognition and respect. Bittoo then tries all short-cuts for money and fame that leads him to slip into the world of immoral activities.

Pulkit Samrat made his big screen debut with the movie. The young actor is quite promising and has done justice to his role. Amitha Pathak was pretty average in the film. Mohan Kapur is okay, while Rajinder Sethi doesn’t get much to do.

In the whole, Bittoo Boss is slow, but filled with emotions. Though there is nothing extraordinary about the film, it is definitely light-hearted and one time watch.

Housefull 2 | Movie Review

Let's talk about the upsides first. This one is certainly less silly and slapstick than its predecessor. This means there are less slaps (literally), less tomfoolery and less noise! Akshay Kumar does a hilarious spin-off on yesteryear villain Ranjeet who holds the reprehensible record of playing rapist in maximum number of films. And Ranjeet actually brings the house down with his cameo in the climax where he successfully self-spoofs himself. For anyone who enjoyed Sajid Khan's brand of silly-yet-crazy one-liners while he was still a TV host, there are plenty of them here that range from the stupid to side-splitting.

Now for the downside - the comedy is more animated (literally) - which means a crocodile bites the bum and a python crunches at crotch of our heroes. Since there are two brawny bodies (Akshay and John) playing the male leads, it's mandatory that they first fight each other, then, together, fight the goons extensively and finally save a father figure from the falling chandelier. If the first part got a Queen of England replica in its climax, the sequel is substituted with a Prince Charles clone. And while interpreting his brand of humour from the small screen to the big screen, Sajid Khan forgets that unlike countdown shows, cinema calls for plot - which his first half is completely devoid of.

Ah, coming to the storyline (if you still insist), the first half is, more or less, exhausted with unnecessary buildup through lackadaisical love stories and fathers-of-bride (Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor) who want billionaire son-in-laws for their daughters. The original essence of the franchise - of filling a house with multiple characters which results into a comedy of errors - initiates only in the second half, as a dozen characters land up in one palatial mansion. Each one mistakes the other for someone else and this comedy of mistaken identities isn't much different from the prequel or its likes. In fact one song (Do You Love Me) is an exact imitation of the climactic number (Dil Pagal Hai) from the cult-comedy No Entry - Johnny Lever gets baffled with the cross-connected pairings here.

The narrative often seems lost between two extremes and opts for a middle-of-the-road settlement. Like despite its wacky sense of filmy humour, the movie gets unnecessarily melodramatic at times. For instance, after effectively pulling off a wicked womanizer character, you don't expect Ranjeet to give a sermon on true love. Or you don't anticipate that the venom-spewing stepbrothers would be seized by instant brotherly love in the climax. So just when you enjoy an element, its antidote kills the fun. And if you noticed, I never ever 'criticized' about lack of logic, et al. That's pardonable by now in the slapstick scheme of things, as far as the proceedings are funny. What I am talking about here is the basic grammar of the genre that gets jumbled up.

The most amusing act comes from beyond the dirty dozen characters. It's Johnny Lever who's hilarious and is especially in his elements in the climax. Akshay Kumar is a pro at such comic characters and pulls off his part with effortless ease. John Abraham struggles with, both, his comic timing and expressions and seems uncomfortable in the role. Riteish Deshmukh is too good and his stuck-in-situation expressions are just priceless. Shreyas Talpade is good as long he lasts in his short-lived character. Amongst the senior actors, Mithun Chakravarthy gets the meatiest part and has strong screen presence. Rishi Kapoor is lively but Randhir Kapoor appears exhausted. Boman Irani hams. The actresses have pretty much nothing to do than looking good. So Jacqueline Fernandes wins the race with her gorgeous looks and Shahazn Padamsee comes a close second. Asin does just about fine for herself. Zareen Khan is irritating and thankfully underutilized. Malaika Arora is regular. Ranjeet, by spoofing himself in a cameo, has perhaps played the most entertaining role of his career.

Housefull 2 is neither fully gratifying nor a house-of-horror like its prequel (or its equivalents).

Blood Money | Movie Review

Vishesh Films land up with their latest offering ‘Blood Money’. The film is no novel at all and nothing new offers for the entertainment of the viewers. The film carries the same time and tested formula which Vishesh Films has been endowing the audiences with for ages. Blood Money is the story of a middle class guy who wants the luxuries of life and finally gets wrapped up with the world of crimes. A number of times, Hindi moviegoers have watched it on screen and in Bhatts’ movies, it is often seen. They are the master of this trade and the same they used to get a hit. But the question jumps up in the mind – would they be successful this time around with the old formulaic theme? The answer is simple – ‘no’ since the enterprise contains the poor script, mundane direction and offers no novelty. It is not a sparkling wine which attracts to be drunk.

Debutante director Vishal Mahadkar does not impress at all with his execution on screen. He makes the outcome as hodgepodge on celluloid that simply gets the viewers bored. There is nothing appealing in direction – it is like mishmash of various things collected to put on screen.

Blood Money is about Kunal (Kunal Khemu) and his wife Arzoo (Amrita Puri). He gets a job at a leading diamond export company in Cape Town. The firm is run by Zaveri (Manish Chaudhari) and his brother Dinesh (Sandip Sikcand). Both move to the place where Kunal gets the lavish perks out of his job which include a luxurious mansion, swanky vehicle and all the luxuries which money confers you with. Gradually he is being dragged into the world of crime. How he manages to gush out of it is what forms Blood Money.

Admit, the passion of the leading guy of dreaming big is well-showcased but the writer and the director could not sustain the rest of the film grippingly. The first half of the film is appealing (not up to the expectations and the standards of viewers nonetheless has some life). The post interval portion lacks worth and carries many flaws. The heroism has been shown to such height which is not absorbing and one cannot swallow it at all. The hero, despite getting stabbed brutally, gives the bigger fists to the hefty henchmen of the villain. The tattered hero easily manages to flee from the office taking the important documents along whereas no security guards are in place at the premises. The writer could have engaged the viewer with riveting script but nothing of this sort happened.

Vishal Mahadkar’s job as a director is not satisfactorily. He disappoints the moviegoers utterly by not letting them watch a good piece of cinematic work. We have been witnessing the debutante directors making their mark tremendously in recent times and the same was being expected from Mahadkar. But he unfortunately thwarted the audiences. Upendra Sidhaye makes the movie lackluster due to the faulty, time and tested and boring script.

Bhatts are famous for offering the music lovers soothing piece of music. With Blood Money, they continue with their successful fashion by churning out melodious songs to hear. Jeet Ganguly, Sangeeth Haldipur and Pranay score the album. Nigam Bomzan attracts with cinematography. The eye-candy locales of Cape Town inject into the hearts.

Kunal Khemu shows his confidence as an actor. He acts with ease and conviction. Amrita Puri is fine and grabs the attention. She has potential to penetrate into the industry with her acting class. Manish Chaudhuri enacts well. Sandiip Sikcand justifies his part with finesse. Mia Uyeda is sizzling. Others too impress with their roles.

Final Verdict by the Critic:

Blood Money is boring fiesta with old time and tested formula. With faulty script and poor direction, it offers nothing to appeal the viewers.
