Agneepath | Movie Review

Review:

It’s a huge risk remaking a film like Agneepath, which (we believe) is one of the toughest Amitabh Bachchan films to remake. Apart from Bachchan’s performance as the iconic Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, the Agneepath of the 90s was a box-office failure. Producer Yash Johar who had put his heart and soul into making the original, was heart broken when the film failed commercially.
Decades later, his son Karan Johar along with his long-time assistant director Karan Malhotra, decide to remake the film and cast Hrithik Roshan as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. While retaining the core storyline, they replace Mithun Chakraborty’s character with Rishi Kapoor’s negative role and also modify the character of the female lead (played by Priyanka Chopra).

The story is pretty simple – Kancha (Sanjay Dutt) kills Master Dinanath Chauhan, his son Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) grows up under mafia king Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor) and eventually takes over Mumbai. His only intention though is to avenge the horrific killing of his father. Kaali (Priyanka Chopra) his only emotional support, loves him unconditionally.

What’s good in Agneepath
The performances are top notch – Not in one scene does Hrithik try to copy Amitabh Bachchan, instead he brings in his own personality, charm and intensity to the character. His eyes convey the emotional turmoil that he is going through. Sanjay Dutt is outstanding as Kancha, his dialogue delivery, devilish laughter make you shudder in fear. Rishi Kapoor is great in a negative role. Priyanka Chopra has little to do, but leaves a mark in her scenes with Hrithik.

Action, emotions and revenge: The storyline is such that, you can’t help but feel for Hrithik’s character. Which is one of the reasons, the climax (last 30 minutes) works big time.  Also, there are quite a few emotional scenes (brother-sister, mother-son relationship) that could make you cry. The action sequences are brilliantly choreographed and performed, especially by Hrithik. The way he run is epic, his intro scene is similar to Krrish.

For a first time director, director Karan Malhotra does very well. Even with the burden of expectations and the inevitable comparisons with the original, Malhotra manages to keep the audience hooked to the proceedings, without trying to cash-in on those popular dialogues (for e.g the ‘Naam Vijay Chauhan’ dialogue is uttered just once).

Ajay-Atul’s music is fantastic, even the way it’s picturized is good. But it sadly slackens the pace and adds to the runtime. Katrina Kaif’s Chikni Chameli received the biggest cheer after Hrithik Roshan’s intro scene.

What not so good in Agneepath
The pace picks up and drops quite a few times. The film as a whole suffers from being a little too slow for today’s generation. Also the length (2 hours 45 mins) could test your patience. A couple of unnecessary songs, could have been completely edited off or cut shorter. Don’t really understand the point of having 4 songs in a film, which increases the runtime by about 20 odd minutes.
A bit of humor would have helped the film immensely. Agneepath is intense and violent from start to finish.

Overall, Agneepath is a good film that could have been better. Do watch it once, if not for anything else, atleast for the fabulous performances. From the box-office point of view, it has immense potential to be one of the biggest grosser in recent times – has enough appeal towards both the classes and the masses. The film has opened to a historic response all over and the word-of-mouth is good.

Aparajita Tumi | Movie Review

Aparajita Tumi :
Bengali cinema has come of age but a few more steps towards something new would not hurt. While on one hand they regularly dish out the commercial fare, they also pull out an occasional gem from the everyday and the common place. However, when it comes to relationships – as experimental and bold Bengali movies have tried to be – they are still a tad bit stereotypical and predictable.
‘Aparajita Tumi’ is no different. The basic premise of the movie rests on these multifarious relationships mostly involving love, a dying love story, a love story that is long over and then some lust. Based on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel - 'Dui Nari Hate Tarabari' – ‘Aparajita Tumi’ literally translated to ‘The unvanquished’ is about situations all too familiar to make the movie a masterpiece.
The story works it self around Pradeep (Prosenjit), Kuhu (Padmapriya Janakiraman) and Ushashi (Kamalinee Mukherjee). Pradeep and Kuhu are married and have two kids. Ushashi is married to Ronojoy. The couples live their ‘perfect’ lives in San Jose. And as most stories go – perfection is only surface glitz.
As Pradeep keeps playing notes to a tune he can’t get right and steals glances at other women – Kuhu cannot understand his ‘juvenile’ oddities. In-your-face Kuhu is too busy running after her kids to make time for such banalities. Ushashi on the other hand nurses serious complexities – she is beautiful but she is under-confident. Her need for approval clashes with Kuhu’s no-nonsense comments. Pradeep tries damage control – but for a woman who has left behind her chances of becoming an actress and is now stuck in the US with a disinterested husband and no kids – solace is a hard bargain.
Hurt after one of Kuhu’s stray unguarded comments made one evening in their house as they host Soumitra Chatterjee, Ushashi and Ronojoy shift to Claremont.
Pradeep gets invited to their new house on one of his business trips to San Francisco. Ushashi seduces him in a span of a dinner and in a few days time Pradeep returns to respond to her advances – their affair starts. Whether she seduces him to get even with Kuhu or it is simply to fill the void in her life - it never becomes too clear.
When Pradeep confesses to Kuhu, she packs her bags and the kids and goes to her mother (Tanushree Shankar). She doesn’t know who the other woman is – and she says that knowing her identity would not change the damage caused. Kuhu leaves her kids with her mother and goes to New York to get some ground on her life. Back to her college days, Kuhu bumps in to her ex-boyfriend Yusuf.
Yusuf follows her relentlessly, admitting that he still loves her and perhaps that is why his marriage failed. Torn between her own dilemmas and love and attention she has missed – Kuhu succumbs to one night with Yusuf. But when morning comes Yusuf leaves her with a poetry book and a note – she had made it very clear that their chapter is over. As Kuhu tries dealing with the changes she receives the news that Pradeep has a malignant brain tumour.
As Kuhu returns to take care of Pradeep, Ushashi comes to confess. Kuhu’s gracious acceptance makes Ushashi feel no better for Pradeep has already said his goodbyes.
The movie has strains of ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ but thank God for small mercies – the great couple exchange does not happen. Ushashi does not try to make her way back in to Pradeep’s life or make her amends with Ronojoy nor does Kuhu give up on her place next to the suffering Pradeep.
Predictability and familiarity aside – the movie is beautifully shot. It has the cosy feel of a matured Hollywood love story. And both the actresses – Kamalinee and Padmapriya look stunning in the shots. Padmapriya as Kuhu has the face of the poetic romances – in scenes she looks strikingly like Mahi Gill – but a prettier and a softer version. Confident and intelligent in her role as Kuhu, one expected a little more resistance on her end when she effortlessly becomes the caring wife.
Perhaps relationships are like that – faced with the direst of resistances – personal ego and anger falls away as easily as they find ground as moments of unhappiness.
Prosenjit aces his role as Pradeep. The stolen glances at other women in restaurants, him succumbing to the seduction of the other woman, the aching nostalgia for a tea stall left behind in Beltala and the piano tune he struggles to complete – is all Prosenjit and perhaps originally so. He makes it look all so effortless.
The movie is a slice of life out of the NRI pages – the American accents against the flawless Bengali, the occasional East Bengal strain in the words – all are very real. This is one more of those Bengali films that can boast of exquisite songs. Music director Shantanu Moitra leaves no room for complaints.
The movie flows like poetry – but well in to the movie – one realizes that we have heard the rhythms before, the rhyme is familiar as is the lilting feel of the words. But none the less, as comfortable familiarity goes – one will listen till the end.
Starring Prosenjit Chatterjee, Padmapriya Janakiraman, Kamalinee Mukherjee, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Indraneil Sengupta, Tanusree Shankar and Kalyan Ray, it is directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury.

Ek Deewana THA | Movie story

Movie Storyline:
Sachin is a regular guy-22 year old engineering graduate from a middle class family in Mumbai who is in love with the world of cinema. As a struggler in the film industry-where his long days are filled with waiting and then some more waiting, surviving on his father’s pocket money and desperately trying to make an entry into any of the main film camps-there is nothing that makes each day worth looking forward to. And that’s when he sees Jessie, and it is love at first sight for him. Jessie is beautiful, elegant, smart and classy. But Jessie is not that simple. Jessie belongs to an orthodox Malayali Nasrani Christian family where watching movies, partying or falling in love are completely taboo.

While Sachin battles with the idea of someone like Jessie and her family living in 21st century, modern Mumbai-he finds himself increasingly drawn to her. Jessie, for her part, tries to forge a friendship between them-believing that cloaking their feelings under the umbrella of friendship would save them heartache, tears and a full blown family drama.

Synopsis:

A man has to give up a life of lifting amps and chasing groupies to take on the challenges of the real world in this independent drama. Jimmy Testagross (Ron Eldard) was a teenage rock & roll fan when he was growing up in Queens, and a couple years out of high school, he landed what seemed like the perfect job -- joining the road crew of hard-rock icons Blue Oyster Cult. After spending 20 years on the road, Jimmy is cut loose when economics force the band to streamline their operation, and at the ripe old age of 40, he has no idea what to do with his life. Needing some time to regroup, Jimmy returns home to visit his elderly mother (Lois Smith), only to discover she's growing senile and may need him to move in and look after her. As he struggles with the notion of facing adult responsibilities for the first time, he also crosses paths with Randy (Bobby Cannavale), who bullied him in high school and still acts like a spoiled brat, and Nikki (Jill Hennessy), Randy's wife, who dated Jimmy in high school and is still holding on to a fading dream of making it as a singer/songwriter. Jill Hennessy, an accomplished musician as well as an actress, wrote the songs she performs in character in the film.

Jodi Breaker | Upcoming Movie

Coming to a theater near you on the 24th of February is Jodi Breakers, the new film which stars the cool jodi of Madhavan and Bipasha Basu. In our recent interview with the actress, she gave us a sneak peek into what the film is all about. “Jodi Breakers is my first romantic comedy. It is opposite Madhavan. It is a really cute film because for the first time I play a very cute and endearing character called Sonali. These two people actually specialize in breaking up couples. We have taken that up as a profession that we are going to break up couples and we are going to make money on it. They are somewhat like divorce experts, but it is not a real profession what we do (laughs) in the film. It’s cute because the girl’s philosophy is that two people who are not in love, they should not be together because then they can have a second chance to find love. The boy’s philosophy is that there is nothing called love so might as well break the couples and make money. Each of them had a bad past experience with love. These two really cute characters meet together and they start this business of jodi breakers and then the story goes on. It is an amazing very cute romantic comedy.”

11-11-11 | Movie Review

After the death of his wife and child, an author travels to Barcelona to see his estranged brother and dying father, where he learns that his life is plagued by events that occur on 11/11/11.

REVIEW:
Director Darren Lynn Bousman takes on a much written about phenomenon. For those who have stayed astute to numerology and the upcoming date of 11.11.11., already well know that there have been documented cases of persons who are seemingly haunted or obsessed with the reoccurrence of double digit numbers. More notably and the primary focal of the numbers is the set 11:11.

In this latest film which seems to take its marketing serious by debuting on the “actual” 11.11.11 date, this very study is explored to a mass of cinema goers. So while it is indeed a movie, the data that is used is actually centered around the phenomena itself.

Timothy Gibbs plays Joseph Crone, a much heralded author who has gained a following of dedicated readers over the years. His works have become best sellers which sell in the millions. Though he has been struggling as of late with writing a follow up novel. This struggle seems to be connected with his insomnia and strange knack for awakening to a clock sporting an 11:11 time display on a pretty consistent basis. This particular number set has also shown up in various points through-out his life usually on tragic or dramatic events. We learn that his wife an child were killed in a fire that an over passionate fan had caused in relation to one of his books. Joseph is called to the side of his dying father in his last days as well to his childhood home. It is here that he reacquaints his relationship with his younger brother Samuel (Michael Landes).

Samuel is a priest who has spent the better portion of his life honoring God and trying to build up his church following. Joseph, the darker atheist of the bunch doesn’t give much thought to religion or what his family has built up over the years. Though while he is making amends within his family he begins to open up to some of its possibilities. During his stay his frequency in seeing this 11:11 sign increases taking him on a journey of research to really discover why this is happening. He finds that the 11:11 number is in fact a sign or event of that which seems to be escalating into “something”. The term “Midwayers” is introduced and the eerie reoccurring appearance of these in-between beings becomes more frequent.

Much of this idea and the myths about it are built up over the course of the film which also seems to get increasingly haunting in the process. Joseph is later joined by an acquaintance he made back home by the name of Sadie (Wendy Glenn) who also helps him into understanding his purpose and reason for being “initiated”

In all this is a pretty good film that offers some worthy scares along the way. The subject matter is of the deeper sort which takes an excellent stab at what has been written “today” on the concept. I will say that the ending was the payoff for me which you’ll just have to discover on your own viewing. Though the relationship between numerology and religion is a complicated and often times dark area that deserves more investigation.

The clincher here is that the actual event itself is also occurring on the movie debut date making for a rather unsettling backdrop of wonder. 11.11.11 is a bit of a slow grind at first but stays with the format of a more classical directing approach. Most folks will expect one thing over the other but while 11:11 is a standalone concept it does make a worthy  attempt at marrying it to religion and the things we don’t understand. If the subject itself is at all of interest, I would point you in the direction of the book 11:11 The Time Prompt Phenomenon by Marie D. Jones and Larry Flaxman. You’ll find some great connections in this read that explain what has occurred so far in relation to the phenomena. 11.11.11 is a powerful film that succeeds in capturing the essence of 11:11 and does so while provide a pretty entertaining foundation.
