Jodi Breakers | Movie Review

There’s been a lot of hype around Jodi Breakers being a copy of Heartbreaker. If you are not in the mood to watch another Hollywood ‘inspired’ flick, then please do buy tickets to JB. Yes, this one is totally Indian and has little resemblance to the French film. Yes, both are about people who go around breaking up unhappy partnerships, but that’s it. There’s nothing else in common. Jodi Breakers revolves around Sid (R Madhavan), who is a divorce expert. He meets Sonali (Bipasha Basu), who is coincidentally a jodi breaker too. They become partners and successfully break up people till one day they are asked to break up Mark’s (Milind Soman) relationship with his ‘mistressMaggie (Dipannita Sharma). The unexpected happens and Sid and Sonali are pushed apart.

The trouble with JB is that the unexpected twist is not exactly a delightful thing, nor is it something that makes us sympathise with either of the lead characters. In fact, it just pushes the viewer away from Sid. While it is clear how and when Sonali falls in love with Sid, you can’t say the same for Sid. He and Sonali laugh, hug, kiss and even make love, but their chemistry fails to crackle. They seem more like the buddies that they are in real life. The writers have made full use of Omi Vaidya’s poor grasp of the language (though his command over Hindi has definitely improved since 3 Idiots). Omi is funny and entertaining, but we can’t say that about the lead pair. Bipasha still manages to express beautifully with her eyes and heat up the screen with her song Bipasha, but Madhavan doesn’t have that advantage either. He does shine in the comic and dramatic scenes – when he explains why he divorced his wife, you can feel his heartbreak – but Madhavan does not have the panache or physique necessary to carry off the romantic hero scenes. The closest that Milind and Dipannita get is for a hug, but they convey a lot more than the lead pair. You really believe that Milind and Dipannita were made for each other. Both of them have improved a lot since 16 December, their previous film together. Mrinalini Sharma excels as the vamp, even though she has very little screen time.

The main troublemaker here is the script. It is funny in parts, inanely ridiculous in others, unconvincingly romantic in the second half and tediously emotional by the time the end nears. So is it a romantic comedy? An emotional drama? Or just a love story? It’s almost as if the writer couldn’t make up his mind and so decided to string elements from all genres together. We can’t make up our minds either. What we do know is that it is an unnecessarily complicated marry-go-round that you might want to see at least once. Go in with zero expectations and you’ll find just about enough to come out of the theatre smiling.

Ek Deewana THA | Movie Review

Gautham Menon is back to Bollywood with his second offering. The director tasted a big success with his Tamil movie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, which he later remade in Telugu as Ye Maaya Chesave. Now, he has adapted the same iconic love story to Hindi as Ek Deewana Tha. Although he has his own dramatic and emotional moments, he fails to make the viewers completely absorb in the love story.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa is a beautiful love story and Gautham Menon has changed several aspect including climax to suit the taste of Hindi audience in Ek Deewana Tha. Prateik Babbar's performance in the main highlight in it. AR Rahman's music, Javed Akthar's lyrics, Gautham's story, MS Prabhu's camera work and beautiful locations are the other highlights of the film.

Ek Deewana Tha is a usual love story, which has much needed drama and emotions. Gautham Menon has created some of the very beautiful moments to viewers in the first half. But his narration turns very slow in the second hour and a few episodes drive the viewers apart from the world of Sachin and Jessie.

Sachin (Prateik) is a BE graduate from a middle class family in Mumbai, but he wants to become a director. One day, he falls in love with Jessie (Amy Jackson) at first sight. But instead of having love affair, Jessie, who belongs to an orthodox Malayali Christian family, tries to forge a friendship between them. What happens next will form the crux of the movie.

Pratheik Babbar has intricate role and he has played it in an authoritative style. The Dhobi Ghat star has delivered a matured act. Amy Jackson also looks charming and she has carried off her part splendidly. Others like Manu Rishi, Sachin Khedekar, Babu Antony, Ashwin Kakumanu, Samantha and Ramesh Sippy have done justice to their respective roles.

AR Rahman's musical score is the major attraction in the technical front and the his composition 'Hosanna' is pick of everyone. MS Prabhu has contributed some stunning visuals and he has wonderfully captured the scenic beauty of Kerala. Manu Rishi's dialogues are commendable. However, editor Anthony Gonsalves could have cut short the length of the movie.

In a nutshell, Ek Deewana Tha is good romantic thriller and this can be good for this Valentine's season.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu | Movie Review

Review -

The well-in-talks movie ‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’ is out in theaters now. Bollywood industry is laced with endless romantic movies and the churning out of these flicks keep on happening on the Indian cinematic abode. Audience love to watch the love sagas on screen. Majority of these kinds of films are being chewed on the same time and tested formulas. Many a time we witness the same age-old formulaic subjects on celluloid, which is why we get bored. And it happens in Bollywood that the moviegoers turn down the romantic flicks made on the routine themes.

Karan Johar, the producer of this film, confers the chances to the new directors to showcase their skills of execution at his junction. Johar this time around gives the mammoth chance to the first time director Shakun Batra, who supremely displays his histrionics on screen. Shakun, though using the big screen for the first time, brings the novelty to the subject of direction that appeals to the cinegoers. Batra tosses away the routine formula of heavy drama widely used in Bollywood movies and instead make the movie lively and vivacious that directly talks to the viewers. And that’s the beauty of this outing!

Batra’s Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu seems to be walking on the lines of Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met but these are just a bit shadows, which develop into the minds of the viewers while watching the flick. In actual, the movie is neither a copy of any flick nor it borrows any idea from any project. The writers and the director make it an utter different and novel enterprise to dish out for the pleasures of the entertainment thirsty cinema buffs.

The movie though is a final product for the youngsters due to its lively and energetic plot but the older generation too can equally entertain with this offering of Shakun Batra. Often a good friendship turns into romance which then culminates into marriage but what happens when you get married by mistake? This is the storyline of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu where two persons bump into each other and land into marriage by mistake that brings the turning point in both persons’ lives.

The film is a present day romance depicted well on screen. The writers have really made the story super alluring and novel where a guy lives his life on the lines of his parents and then a girl hits his life and changes his utter perspective towards the lively things life offers.

Shakun is a brilliant story-teller and he proves it on celluloid. There is no sign of yawning in the auditorium as the viewers find themselves fixed on the screen from the initial reels to the climax of the movie.  Very intelligently made film, it lets you sail through the pleasures all the way.

Rahul (Imran Khan) goes on the lines on his parents (Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah) to spend the life. He is an architect in Las Vegas and loses his job. Getting afraid, he now hides the fact from his parents. He tries to find another job. Destiny makes him meet Riana (Kareena Kapoor). She is a hairstylist and vivacious and bubbly by nature. She is totally different from Rahul.  The events happen between them take both of them to meet up on the eve of Christmas over drinks. Post the night of dissipation, both wake up and explore that they are married. Now Rahul is more afraid, as he has to hide two truths from his parents – job loss and marriage. Now they both plan to null and void the marriage and reach at the court and get the appointment in 10 days. Unlikely friendship takes place between the two over the coming ten days which are filled with laughs, interesting moments and arguments between the two.

The movie is set in the urban cities of Las Vegas and Mumbai and the eye-candy locales of the cities arrest the breath. Shakun does not waste the time and makes the introduction of the leading characters of the movie and then starts making his focus on the two main characters – Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. The direction of Shakun is simply awesome and intelligently done. The first half of the film is swathed with many important frames which inject pleasures into the souls of the audience. Post interval portion shows of the actual saga of the movie that is attention binding. The film shifts to India (Mumbai) where the twist emerges. The entire movie is well executed but the three sequences let you salute the director, as they are classily picturised – When Rahul (Imran Khan) confronts his parents, outbreak at dinner table and the climax of the movie.

The writers of the film – Ayesha Devitre and Shakun Batra deserve the brownie points for making such a different, unique and attention-grabbing script. Their story is really an out of the box idea. The cinematography of the movie is a work of class. The locales of Las Vegas and Mumbai have been captured with aplomb. Editing is crispy and deserves full marks. Music of the film by Amit Trivedi is superlative and spongy.

Imran Khan shows his class in this film. Enacting brilliantly in front of your senior actress (Kareena Kapoor) was not that easy for him but he did not show any sign of being Kareena’s junior. Kareena Kapoor loots the scene with her usual luminous acting prowess. Her lively character injects soothing pleasures into the souls of the viewers. Kareena can now wait for the best actress award for this performance. Boman Irani is fabulous. Ratna Pathak Shah is great to watch. Sonia Mehra is interesting to view in cameo role. Ram Kapoor is wonderful. Rest of the cast impresses as well.

Final Verdict by the Critic:

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a treat for the lovers. Laced with the novel and livewire script, brilliant direction and energetic performance, the movie is a true gift to make your Valentine’s Day super rich and alluring.

Players | Movie review

Review :

So every clever step from the original is counterbalanced with a brand Bollywood cliche. Like if the film is about gold heist, the lead players ought to have a heart of gold to start with. Which means the 10000-crore robbery is not merely propelled by greed but to achieve that adhura sapna of building a school for orphans!!! When it comes to getting the best players for what is claimed to be the world's biggest robbery, all of them conveniently come on a platter and coincidentally from the same country. Further when the robbery goes wrong, the heist flick gets re-moulded as a revenge drama. And last but not the least, a smart-n-subtle climax is substituted by the traditional dishum-dishum ending. Perhaps it's mandatory that the hero break the villain's bones before killing him. How else would the audience get that paisa vasool feeling? Huh!

The supposedly sophisticated heist film starts with a corny jewelry store robbery that acts as an early eye-opener on what to expect thereon. The big plan here is to loot a locomotive laden with gold bars en route from Russia to Romania. The players comprise of the usual suspects - an illusionist (Bobby Deol), a hacker (Neil Mukesh), an explosive expert (Sikander Kher), a prosthetic expert (Omi Vaidya) and a locomotive expert ( Bipasha Basu) who is obviously expected to double up as the seductress. And then there is Charlie (Abhishek Bachchan) who has no expertise and perhaps that makes him the group leader.

When it's an Abbas-Mustan film, you would be betrayed if there are no betrayals. So there's one traitor in the group and rest seek revenge from him. Also it goes without saying that if any of the main leads is eliminated by the interval point, they have to come back from dead in the second half. The director-duo have almost run out of their standard set of shock tactics and are falling prey to their own brand, making the suspense flick, more or less, predictable. What ensues is the ordinary one-upmanship between two male rivals, a theme that has already been exploited by the directors to the point of diminishing returns in Ajnabee, Humraaz, Naqaab and Race.

To the film's merit, the train robbery in the first half is well-conceptualized and thrillingly choreographed in snowy Russian terrains. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the heist in the second half using mini coopers in traffic jam, which was the highlight of the original. Amidst slapstick car chase and convoluted execution, the thriller never registers the requisite impact. The pacing is intentionally kept fast to cover up the numerous loopholes in narrative.

Ravi Yadav's cinematography is competent and the film ably captures the untouched locales of Russia and New Zealand. Allan Amin's action is well-designed. Pritam's music is plain functional. The dialogues are often banal.
