The Hunger Games | Upcoming Movie

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games is an upcoming science fiction action drama film directed by Gary Ross and is based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Woody Harrelson. It is scheduled to be released on March 23, 2012.

Story Line

In the ruins of what was once North America, the nation Panem randomly chooses one boy and girl, ages 12-18, from the 12 districts to risk their lives in the Hunger Games, a ruthless competition in which each contestant, or tribute, attempts to kill the others until only one remains. The winner receives honor, gifts, and enough food and supplies to never worry for anything material again.

The Games, while entertainment for the Capitol's citizens, are a yearly reminder to the 12 districts of their unsuccessful rebellion 74 years ago. As a sign of the Capitol's strength and power, each of the districts must sacrifice two tributes each year.
In District 12, sixteen year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has taken responsibility of taking care of her mother and sister Primrose "Prim" (Willow Shields) since her father died in a mine accident when she was 11. Since the age of 12, Katniss has put her name in the lottery, or reaping, more than once. In return, she receives extra grain and oil for her family. In addition, Katniss has been illegally hunting for food outside the gates of District 12 with her friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth), whose father died in the same mining accident as Katniss' and similarly cares for his family.

Prim, now age 12, has her name placed in the reaping for the first time—only once—and is, unluckily, chosen to compete in the Games. Katniss volunteers in replacement of her sister, taking it upon herself to risk her life and fight against other tributes, including highly trained "Career Tributes" who have prepared for the Games their entire lives, as well as Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), the boy tribute from District 12, who has secretly loved Katniss since childhood. With the help of their mentor, a drunk who is the only living of two former victors of District 12, Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), they must practice before the Games.

Royal Bengal Rahasya : Movie Review

It’s the month of December and Feluda is back with the latest Feluda film-Royal Bengal Rahasya which has hit the screens. December has always had an unique relation with Feluda as they always release on December to cash in on the festive mood of the season.

After last year’s ‘Gorasthaney Sabdhan’ which was a phenomenal success last year because it was the first film in the series to have been shot entirely in Kolkata and while it was cerebral in nature and featured a part of Kolkata and certain places of yesteryears which were/are very special to the city of Kolkata, Feluda‘s latest adventure is in the jungle.

This time Feluda goes to the jungles of North Bengal on the invitation of a zamindar and wildlife writer Mohitosh Singh Roy and unearths the hidden secrets of the Singha Roy family. There are certain characters like Mohitosh’s secretary Tarit, Sashanka, Debatosh (elder brother of Mohitosh and slightly deranged) who make the story quite interesting. There is a death, there are lies, there is deception, there is an old puzzle to be solved and there is a man eating tiger and even a snake all of which makes the film a highly adventurous one.

The film does not have a live tiger though one might expect to see one and the one we see on screen is animated though the snake is real. However the plot, the characters and the setting in the jungle makes it very interesting. The film is also a visual treat because
the scenes shot in the jungles of the Doars are simply captivating and so are the interiors of the palace in Dhenkanal in Orissa as well as the exterior. In fact any person would think the palace lies in the same forest in it’s interiors, but in reality the palace is in Orissa and the forest in North Bengal. Shocking, yet marvelous. Incidentally the palace shown in the film belongs to K.P.Singh Deo, a veteran Congress leader.

The background score in Feluda films has always been essential to the theme and moment and this film is no exception. Though we see other characters with cell phones, Feluda continues to be without one. Maybe that will destroy the charm. There are enough moments to keep the suspense going.

There are newcomers in this film who are new to the Feluda series like Bhaswar Chatterjee, B.D.Mukherjee and Debesh Raychoudhury. They are simply fantastic.
The person who really stands out in this film is Bibhu Bhattacharya. In his last role as Jatayu before he passed away, it is a complete last hurrah from him! He really stands out with his acting and the scene where he falls unconscious while sitting on the branch of a tree and yet manages not to fall is a class act and a scene which stands out in the entire film. It makes you think that you will never see the man again! Surely Sandip Roy will have a tough time finding a new Jatayu as and when he makes another Feluda film again.

Royal Bengal Rahasya is a perfect winter entertainer for all Feluda fans with the thrills in the right place and the last hurrah from Bibhu is the thing to watch out for.

Gosai Baganer Bhoot : Movie Story

Making a movie for kids is risky business. Filmmakers have to keep in mind that, in order to strike gold at the box-office, enough buzz and curiosity have to be generated among the adult cine-goers as well, so that they actually bring the little ones along with them to the theaters. The tricky nature of this genre has made most directors in recent times shy away from trying their hands at making a film with children as the main target audience. The ahead-of-it's-time ‘Patalghar’ and the immensely forgettable ‘Friend’ have not instilled much confidence among producers to take up kids’ films as their projects either. In such a scenario, director Nitish Roy’s much-anticipated ‘Gosai Baganer Bhut’ comes as a whiff of fresh air. While the movie is not flawless, it certainly offers enough reason to bring joy to young viewers ...

The girl with the dragon tattoo : Movie review

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher is certainly worth watching as long as you don't compare it to the original. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a murder thriller and is the first in the best selling Millennium trilogy by the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson.

The Swedish version of the film came out nearly two years ago and was an instant hit in Europe, America and Canada. Though critics might say that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is not as good as the original, it still manages to hold its own.

Story :

Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), publisher of a Swedish investigative magazine, Millennium, is disgraced and bankrupt after losing a libel case brought in by a crooked tycoon (Ulf Friberg). He picks up a job offered by industrialist Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), who not only offers him good money, but also gives him the chance to take revenge against the tycoon.

Blomkvist was earlier told that he had to write Vanger's memoir, but soon he realises that he has been hired to solve the four-decade-old disappearance of Vanger's teenage niece (Lisbeth Salander).

Fincher makes sure that the suspense builds with every sequence as Bloomkvist and his young co-worker dig deeper into the disappearance.

Don2 : Movie review

Director: Farhan Akhtar
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani

By the time it dawns on you that a 6-feet contemporary Bollywood actor (in a cameo) has been passed off as the unabridged undercover for Shah Rukh Khan's Don in the film, you are expected to be equipped for many more of such cinematic liberties. And rather than crying a spoiler there, you could rather preset your logic mode to the multiple masquerades in store in the movie.

Don 2, the sequel starts off almost from where the earlier episode ended and while it attempts to maintain some continuity with the last installment, it fails to bring back the intelligence of the original. Don (Shah Rukh Khan) emerges in Malaysia and gets himself arrested only to get the convicted Vardhan (Boman Irani) out of jail. Vardhan has keys to a video footage which they use to blackmail a bank vice president (Alyy Khan) to get access to a German bank's security systems. The big plan is the old-fashioned and formulaic robbery of the currency printing plates from the bank. So the sequel to Don merely boils down to being a heist film.

The film, more or less, starts as an action flick with Don's one-man-army introduction in Thailand, a convenient escape from Malaysian prison and some conventional car-chase sequences in Germany. None of them excite much until you realize you have already reached the interval. The plotting and scheming starts in the second half with an easy induction of a hacker (Kunal Kapoor) who can not only barge into the security systems of the vault but also seems to have blueprints of the bank building to the minutest details.

The writing by Ameet Mehta, Amrish Shah and Farhan Akhtar is more style over substance attempting to camouflage cliches with the cool quotient. Even the central heist seems confusing and convoluted but Farhan Akhtar intentionally keeps the pacing swift enough, leaving no time for the viewer to notice any loose ends. However, the more he makes the situation easy to suit his script, the more it becomes difficult for the audience to digest things.

Even the robbery seems mundane Hollywoodish exercise with no moments of thrills in particular. However the highlight isn't the heist per se but Don's hidden agenda behind it. While it isn't much difficult to decode the mystery, it makes for a decent climax. The director mercifully keeps mush away from the major proceedings though he can't resist the temptation in the climactic portion in his attempts to induce chemistry between Don and his rival, Roma (Priyanka Chopra). But Don would have been better-off as the suave and stonyhearted killer rather than a 'Rahul' prototype. Thankfully the chemistry is peripheral and never blooms into romance.

Also one would have preferred to see Don as more brain over brawny hero but the director makes him a jack of all trades giving him James Bond kinda complete-man characteristics. Vulnerability is alien to Don, essentially making him larger-than-life. But despite being an unethical drug-lord, Farhan Akhtar's treatment is such that you still adore him as the hero over abhorring him as an outright villain. Don 2 never gets into the good v/s evil battle.

The cinematography by Jason West is striking. However Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's musical score doesn't leave a mark this time and the background score has to repeatedly resort to the theme-piece from the original for some impact. Farhan Akhtar's punch-lines in dialogues are initially amusing but with a Don-ism in every second line, it sounds hackneyed and hollow after a point.

Shah Rukh Khan is in his comfort zone as the Don bringing more charm than cruelty to his character. He rules supreme and the film's indulgence with him is as much as Don's obsession with himself. Everyone else is overshadowed. Priyanka Chopra is passable. Lara Dutta, as the Don's moll, is simply a substitute for Isha Koppikhar from the prequel and is hardly there for a few scenes. Boman Irani is underused. Kunal Kapoor fails to register any impact. Om Puri, Alyy Khan and Nawab Shah are plain functional. Sahil Shroff irritates.

Don 2 ends with the promise of Don 3 (that's what the number-plate of Don's bike reads) and the trademark dialogue 'Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkim hai' (It's not just difficult to catch don, it's impossible). But we would surely want to 'catch' up with a more worthy sequel to this. It's not impossible Farhan. Is it?

Verdict: Above Average
